Private LAMDA Drama Lessons

About LAMDA

The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) is one of the oldest drama schools in the United Kingdom, and is a centre of excellence in performance training. It is also the UK's largest speech and drama awarding body, with a reputation for excellence across the globe.

LAMDA lessons are not exclusive to those wishing to pursue an interest in the performing arts, but are designed to equip candidates, whatever their age and aspirations, with a range of skills that will serve throughout their life, improving self-confidence, assertiveness, unlocking their imagination, and helping to develop their vocal and reading skills in a fun and enthusiastic atmosphere.

LAMDA Lessons

LAMDA lessons are available for students from seven years of age to adulthood, and will take place at my home in Brighton, on weekday evenings.

The lessons can either be one to one, or can be shared with a friend, and can be for either half an hour or one hour's duration.

The lessons will be roughly structured to correspond to the academic year's terms, with 10 sessions per term, at a cost of either £15 or £30 per lesson depending on your requirements - see below for more information.

Courses Offered

The following courses of lessons are offered:

The Speaking of Verse & Prose

To develop skills for effective oral communication of the written word. Students will engage imaginatively with the thought, emotion, style and form of a text and build skills in voice, diction, posture and versification.

Acting

To develop skills to communicate dramatic text to an audience. Students will explore style, form, character, subtext and context in order to realise the specific demands of the text. Building skills in voice, diction and movement in order to realise the specifics of the character and situation, in order to create a credible sense of reality.

Reading for Performance

To develop skills for reading aloud to an audience and devising a programme of material for performance. Students will learn how to place text within a context of selecting, linking and structuring material around a theme in order to create a fully integrated performance.

Devising Drama

To develop skills to devises a dramatic performance and present it to an audience. Students will learn how to devise a character and situation within a defined dramatic shape and structure.

LAMDA Examinations

Grades start at Grade 1, up to bronze, silver and gold medal standard (Grade 8) for older teenagers to adults.

Beyond the medals there are diploma courses (including the teaching diploma) which are more academic based and which may take up to two years to complete.

For each chosen subject grade, students will be given the opportunity to work towards a LAMDA Examination. These are not compulsory, but I feel support progression and allows the student to extend their personal and vocational skills and help realise their potential.

These take place at a local examination centre - for our area, usually in Haywards Heath - and are marked by an external LAMDA examiner. LAMDA graded examinations are accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA).

Lesson Structure

There are 10 lessons per term - structured to loosely correspond with the academic year, with breaks allowing for school holidays.

Lessons may be one to one, or shared with friends or related students. Lessons may be of either one hour or half an hour in duration.

Enrolment is at the beginning of each term by completion of a booking form and payment of one term's fee.

Upon enrolment, each student will receive a confirmation timetable showing the day and time of their lessons, which will have been made in advance by mutual agreement.

Missed Lessons

There are no refunds for missed lessons, unless cancelled by myself. Should anything arise to prevent or delay attendance I need to be informed as soon as possible. I will always try to rearrange a lesson for another day but this lies at my discretion and cannot be guaranteed.

Cancellation of Lessons

Other than in exceptional circumstances, or unless an alternative arrangement has been made, one term's written notice of withdrawal from lessons or one term's fees in lieu of notice is required.

Books and Study Material

For Speech and Drama students preparing for examinations or auditions it is expected that, where appropriate, the student will obtain their own copy of the play or book that they are working on and any research material required. Normally I have copies of poems to be studied. All students should provide themselves with a suitable folder in which to keep their texts, exercises and theory notes.
